Rashidi Yekini

Few hours after his death was announced, an article on Rashidi Yekini appeared on Wikipedia chronicling his life and achievements, including the illness that would eventually end it.
Very touching is that he, perhaps, never found his place or purpose in life.
He found fame (and perhaps a measure of fortune) in football, winning a number of laurels both in Nigeria, Africa and Portugal. In his later years, he lived alone apart from his three wives and three children, battled depression and other mental disorders.
The reactions from many who knew him(?) was that of disbelief, and denial as is the case when someone hears about a death.
For many others perhaps a death(or news of one) is a reminder of what happens to our soul.
May his soul rest in peace
Being a christian, I remember a few things from the Holy Bible:

  • The soul that sinneth, it shall die. (Yes, souls die! Forget immortality).
  • All have sinned (except Christ and yet he chose to die – even though he did it to prove a few points;
    1. he loved us enough. John 15:13
    2. he can conquer death and can share this power with us)
  • Through sin came death. Romans 5:12, 6:23,
  • Through christ came freedom (Romans 5:21) from death and thereby, immortality!

And answers to a host of other life’s issues.
Of course there is a caveat. To get this offer, you have to be a friend. To be a friend, you have to do his bidding. Its easy because he has given you all knowledge with nothing hidden. All is there in the bible.
Even easier if you get a mentor and study partner the way you did back at school, and this makes the burden lighter!
I know salvation is personal, but as iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another. So find a mentor (church or pastor), textbooks (a copy of the Holy Bible, for a start), partner and study to show yourself approved (2Timothy 2:15) to be a friend of God.
